DRY EYE & MENOPAUSE : AN INNOVATIVE FORMULA TO SLOW EYE AGING AND TO EASE THE DISCOMFORTS OF MENOPAUSE
Dry eye disease (DED) is defined by the International Dry Eye Workshop as “A multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface.” This can cause debilitating symptoms including burning, foreign body sensation, and decreased vision which affect daily activities.
Postmenopausal women have higher incidence of DED: large scale epidemiological studies conducted in the United States have shown that the rate of DED in women over 50 years old is nearly double that in men over 50.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that there is a hormonal etiology behind women’s susceptibility to DED; production of oestrogen and testosterone by the ovaries is markedly reduced after menopause and there is an increased reliance on peripheral sources of these sex hormones.
There is substantial evidence that androgens and oestrogens are implicated in dry eye and thus hold promise as a potential future treatment.
